Gentle Support for an Overstimulated Nervous System

Lately, many of us are walking around with nervous systems that feel stretched thin. The kind of stress that does not just come from a busy schedule, but from the weight of the world, ongoing uncertainty, and the constant demand to keep functioning anyway.
I see this every day in my practice. Women who feel anxious all the time. Women who cannot fully relax even when they finally have a quiet moment. Women who feel wired and exhausted at the same time, unsure why their bodies feel so on edge.
Your nervous system is always listening. It responds to your environment, your responsibilities, your history, and the season of life you are in. When it has been under stress for too long, it starts to ask for support.
Herbs can be a gentle and powerful way to meet your nervous system where it is. Not to force calm, but to create enough safety and steadiness that your body can begin to soften on its own.
Below are six herbs that I often reach for when supporting the nervous system. Each one offers a slightly different kind of support. As you read through them, notice which ones you feel drawn to. Sometimes the body recognizes what it needs before the mind does.

Passionflower Passiflora incarnata
Does your mind race at night, keeping you from falling asleep?
Do you feel anxious, restless, or trapped in a endless cycle of overthinking?
Are you senseitive to stress and easily overwhelmed by noise, chaos or stimulation?

Chamomile Matricaria recutita
Do you have anxiety that shows up as a nervous stomach or digestive upset?
Are you pregnant and looking for a gentle herb for you and baby?
Are you looking for a calming herb that is safe and soothing for your little ones?

Motherwort Leonurus cardiaca
Do you experience heart palpitation, chest tightness or panic attacks?
Do you feel overworked, under appreciated, or like you're one meltdown away from snapping?
Are you navigating PMS, perimenopause, or postpartum and longing for emotional steadiness?

Tulsi Ocimum tenuiflorum
Do you feel emotionally drained and looking for something to uplift your spirit?
Are you often stuck in cycles of chronic stress, overwhelm, or burnout?
Are you looking for a wonderful tasting herb you can enjoy as a tea?

Milky Oat Tops Avena sativa
Are you experiencing burnout, chronic stress or exhaustion?
Are you trying to quit caffeine, nicotine, or other stimulants and feeling on edge?
Do you feel worn down, frazzled or like your nerves are shot?

Skullcap Scutellaria lateriflora
Do you feel wired but exhausted, like your nervous system can't seen to power down, even when you are bone tired?
Do you dread appointments or travel because of anticipatory anxiety?
Do muscle twitches, jaw tension, or menstrual cramps flare up when you're stressed or overstimulated?
There is no single herb or approach that works for everyone. Herbs can be incredibly supportive for the nervous system, but they are just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to truly supporting ourselves in a holistic way. What your nervous system needs can shift depending on what you are carrying and the season you are in.
If one of these herbs stood out to you, trust that curiosity. Your body is often pointing you toward support. And if you are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or just not quite yourself, know this. You are not broken. Your nervous system is responding to the world around you.
