The Parts System: Measuring in Parts

Danielle Caster

In Herbalism instead of using specific measurements sometimes we use something called the parts system. When blending teas, this flexible system lets you adjust the recipe size depending on how big of a batch you want to make.

Essentially, 1 part represents a single unit of measurement, which you can scale up or down.

For Example:

1 part= 1 teaspoon: Use this for a small batch of the blend

1 part= 1 tablespoon: Use this for a medium size batch of the blend

1 part= 1/2 cup: Use this for a large size batch of the blend

1 part= 1 cup: Use this for an extra large batch of the blend.

You get the point. Increase or decrease the size of the parts depending on the amount you are wanting to make.

After blending your herbs, store them in an airtight glass container and out of the sun to extend their shelf life.

This method makes it easy to customize any tea recipe to suit your need, whether you are making a small amount or preparing a larger batch to share or store for easy use later.

Directions:

  • Once you have your parts blended and your tea blend is finished. A rule of thumb is 1-2 tablespoons of tea blend to every 8 ounces of water.

  • Cover and steep for at least 15 minutes or longer for a stronger tea.
