What can you start doing now, even if you don’t plan on trying to conceive for a year… or even longer?

It’s been my experience and honestly, probably how most of us were taught that once you’re pregnant, that’s when everything changes. That’s when you clean up your diet, quit the bad habits, start paying attention to what your body needs.
But what you do before pregnancy matters just as much, if not more.
The months and years leading up to conception play a huge role in the health of your cells, your pregnancy, and ultimately the health of your baby.
Your body is constantly in a state of renewing and rebuilding. So when you’re nourishing yourself now, you’re supporting the quality of the cells your body will later use to grow a baby.
What you do today matters.
Here are five things you can start doing now, whether you’re thinking about trying next month, in two years, or somewhere in between.
1. Start Taking a Prenatal Vitamin Now
Yes, now.
Most prenatals are formulated with nutrients your body needs during pregnancy like folic acid, iron, DHA and choline. Starting early helps build up your nutrient stores so your body isn’t playing catch up later.
2. Begin Making Simple, Nourishing Food Swaps
When I work with fertility clients, one of the first things we focus on are nutrient dense, whole foods.
Starting these habits in the preconception phase makes them so much easier to carry into pregnancy and postpartum. Think Mediterranean style eating with lots of whole plant foods, healthy fats, and being more mindful about dairy and meat.
This isn’t about perfection. It’s about consistency and giving your body nourishment.
3. Prioritize Sleep, Movement, and Lowering Stress
Good quality sleep, regular movement, and supporting your nervous system are foundational.
When your body feels rested and safe, it’s much more receptive to reproduction. These are the basics, but they matter more than most people realize.

4. Reduce or Eliminate: Smoking, Vaping, and Alcohol
Yes, I know this one can feel like a big ask.
But starting now gives you time to ease out of these habits and find healthier ways to cope with stress. You don’t have to do it overnight, but moving in that direction now will support you in the long run.
5. Incorporate Nourishing Herbal Teas
Drinking mineral rich herbal teas formulated to support fertility and reproductive health can be a simple, grounding way to support your body during this phase.
Be on the lookout for the DC Potions Fertility Blend coming later this year. I’m very excited about this one and can't wait to share it with you!
Since you know I’ll never miss a chance to recommend a good book, one of my teachers, Liane Moccia, that I was lucky enough to learn about fertility from, wrote The Herbal Fertility Handbook: Natural Strategies to Increase Your Chances of Getting Pregnant. It’s packed with information on how to support yourself holistically during this phase.
And I want to mention one more thing that I feel like doesn’t get talked about enough…
So much of the focus is placed on the ovulating partner when it comes to fertility. But the sperm producing partner is 50% of the equation. If you can get your partner on board with some of the changes above especially nutrition, stress reduction, and lifestyle changes, the impact can be significant.
And of course, if you’re wanting more personalized support, I’d love to work with you.
I offer custom protocols tailored to your specific needs. You can book a Free 15 Minute Call through my website to learn more about working together one on one.
